Congratulations, By the Way

I know, right? What am I doing posting on a Saturday night — during a holiday weekend no less? Well, the truth is, last night I woke up in a hot sweat thinking that there might be someone out there who has not read Congratulations, By The Way, the book version of George Saunders’ now-famous convocation speech given last June at Syracuse University. And if that is indeed the case, I felt the need to remedy the situation immediately. I know we here at DALS tend to get hyperbolic when the subject is Saunders (author of the award-winning short-story collection Tenth of December and one of the original DALS guest-posters), but diehard readers know why. His writing is big-hearted and generous; his capacity for empathy, seemingly endless. What he regrets most in life, Saunders tells graduating seniors, are failures of kindness.

I believe that by handing Congratulations to a graduate or a friend, you are handing them not just a book, but a message, a philosophy, a worldview.

Here’s one of my favorite moments in the speech:

And so, a prediction, and my heartfelt wish for you: as you get older, your self will diminish and you will grow in love. You will gradually be replaced by love. If you have kids, that will be a huge moment in your process of self-diminishment. You really won’t care what happens to you, as long as they benefit. That’s one reason your parents are so proud and happy today. One of their fondest dreams has come true: you have accomplished something difficult and tangible that has enlarged you as a person and will make your life better, from here on in, forever.

We like the message of this book so much we bought it for every graduating senior in our town’s high school. (It’s a tiny class and we got a discount since — full disclosure here — Andy is the editor, so we may not be quite as kind as I’m making us out to be.) And we want to start spreading the word in your corner of the world, too. So we’re giving away ten copies this weekend…as in right now! It’s going to be a little different this time, though — there will be five winners total, and each winner will receive two copies, one for you, and, in the spirit of kindness, one to hand to someone who you love. Contest ends Memorial Day at 5:00 ET.  Comment below to be eligible. Good luck!
.
How do you know a book is gift-worthy? When it’s designed and illustrated by Chelsea Cardinal, that’s how!
Contest Update: All the winners have been notified. Congrats to Nicola (198), Amy (216), Liesel (238), Nina (272), and Sarah (295). Thanks to everyone who played!

So thoughtful of you! My oldest is graduating 8th grade in a few weeks – a pretty big deal in Canada – and heading to high school in September, so right now we’re talking a lot about futures, goals and accomplishments. I love the passage in the last photo you posted!

Thanks for this post! If I am not a recipient of your giveaway I’ll definitely go seek this book out. The description of a parents pride at their child’s accomplishment, self diminishment, was abundant a week ago in our household as I first watched my middle daughter graduate undergrad, then my youngest daughter graduate HS and finally all of us flying to NYC to watch my oldest graduate grad school. All in one weeks time! My heart skips a beat as I watch each child become such accomplished, gracious young women.

We have two recent college graduates in our life-Dan and Michael-who for the past two years have generously shared their creative talents in acapella, improv, and hardcore play with our sweet son Tomas-all the while answering his (and occasionally our) big questions about religion, slavery, and slapstick comedy. Most of all they taught our son that grown men can care about more than sports and can love a little guy with open hearts.

As I lay here, propped up in a hospital bed, I realize I so need this book. My two babes – one almost two and one almost eleven weeks – are at home with their poppa and have no idea what’s going on, what an acetabular fracture is, or what “car accident” means. All I know is I have a whole host of people to give this book to — folks who have covered us in grace and help and casseroles. Staring down four more months until I can put weight on a right leg, I feel like *I* should be ordering this one in bulk. Thanks!

My daughter is about to graduate from high school. I love that George Saunders has put kindness, or being loving, into the public conversation in such a big way. I see in my daughter and her friends that they are ready for this conversation and they want to embrace this, but they are terrified of the “real world” and how will they make a living. I hope every one of them reads this and that it bolsters them up when they falter.

This book (which i checked out of the library and loved- sorry Random House, hope that doesn’t disqualify me) reminds me of that wonderful poem by Naomi shahib NYE:

Kindness

Before you know what kindness really is
you must lose things,
feel the future dissolve in a moment
like salt in a weakened broth.
What you held in your hand,
what you counted and carefully saved,
all this must go so you know
how desolate the landscape can be
between the regions of kindness.
How you ride and ride
thinking the bus will never stop,
the passengers eating maize and chicken
will stare out the window forever.

Before you learn the tender gravity of kindness,
you must travel where the Indian in a white poncho
lies dead by the side of the road.
You must see how this could be you,
how he too was someone
who journeyed through the night with plans
and the simple breath that kept him alive.

Before you know kindness as the deepest thing inside,
you must know sorrow as the other deepest thing.
You must wake up with sorrow.
You must speak to it till your voice
catches the thread of all sorrows
and you see the size of the cloth.

Then it is only kindness that makes sense anymore,
only kindness that ties your shoes
and sends you out into the day to mail letters and
purchase bread,
only kindness that raises its head
from the crowd of the world to say
it is I you have been looking for,
and then goes with you every where
like a shadow or a friend.

We just celebrated my oldest nephews graduation from college on Saturday after all thirteen of us, from the 9 year old little brother to our 85 year old parents trekked to Connecticut the weekend before to attend the ceremony. This book has struck a deep chord with me as a parent. For preschool and kindergarten, we enrolled our two girls in a montessori program where the practice of kindness was encouraged with every daily lesson. I want to begin by saying that you have a fantastic blog. I came across it a couple of months ago and have been following it regularly and I am finally delurking!
For this giveaway: The paragraph you stated from George Saunders speech struck a chord and made me empathic to exactly what my parents feel at each of my achievements, no matter how big or small. It also prompted me to go and read his complete speech which was funny and inspiring. I have personally experienced the changes that can be brought about by simply being kind, empathic and loving and that have made me a much happier person. For someone who can be relatively cynical, it is ironical that I enjoy reading and being inspired by graduation speeches every year. Both my brother and I graduate this fall, him with a Bachelors in Engineering and me with a PhD in Biology and this book would definitely teach us to be more thankful and cherish all that we have. (In addition, to the very expensive camera that I already received as a pre-graduation gift:)).
