Introducing Nerd Alert

You guys might be wondering why it’s July 10 and there has been none of the usual summer book club coverage for your kids. Well this year, instead of asking Lemony Snicket or George Saunders or Shaun Tan for reading recommendations, we figured we’d step things up a bit and go right to the source: Our 11-year-old daughter, Phoebe, who I’m proud to say has launched her own blog, Nerd Alert. It’s dedicated to the great love of her life — books, comic, graphic novels, and “other essentials” as her tagline says. She’s promised to post reviews at least once a week for the rest of the summer. Head on over there for her very first — and tell your kids about it, too!

That’s so exciting — my son, Dash (who is 9), and I have been following the kids’ recommendations via DALS for ages now… I’ll send him on over to Nerd Alert (great name — I’m always excited to see a fellow nerd girl own it) as soon as he’s home from geeking out at museum day camp…

LOVE! I am a 6th grade teacher, and I am making a list of blogs that my students can go on to read reviews and what not. I will add Phoebe’s blog to that list. I have just started my own food blog, so I am hoping to inspire them to write and read about what they love and share that with others through writing.

Congrats to Phoebe! I am sending her blog to my going into 6th grade daughter who read Esperanza Rising in 5th grade. I am hopeful she will embrace her suggestions!

That is SOOO Cool! Congrats to Phoebe. My 8 year old has recently become a voracious reader (warms my heart), I’ll be sure to show her this…her almost 4 year old brother is sad he can’t read his own book yet! Look forward to more posts!

LOVE! I am an educator and encourage kids all the time to start blogs! I also love recommending book review blogs by kids to other kids and parents!

My nine-year-old son is as excited about this as I am about DALS. Kudos to Phoebe.

Way to go Pheobe! NPR has a great book and comic book reviewer named Glen Weldon. You may want to seek out some of this writing to share with Pheobe.
